7 Albums Paired With Froots & The Maytals

 

Having a beer while listening to music is the greatest pleasure in life.

You may disagree and start offering things you perceive to be more pleasurable, but you’d be wrong and that’s the end of it.

(We don’t literally have a jukebox here in the brewery… or do we?)

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Kaya

This 1978 release was considered a lot less militant and a lot more easy going than previous albums from Bob Marley & the Wailers. It’s the perfect sunny-afternoon-sipping-a-beer album, with tracks like Easy Skanking, Is This Love and Sun Is Shining – yes, the same Sun Is Shining which was given an Ibiza remix by Funkstar Deluxe in 1999.

 

Trojan Reggae Classics

The Trojan record label was founded in 1968 in the UK and was responsible for introducing the world to dozens of reggae stars and songwriters. It also gave voice to subgenres like ska and rocksteady. This collection features some banging tunes from the likes of John Holt and Max Romeo.

 

Toots & the Maytals – Funky Kingston

The Maytals were considered The Beatles to the Wailers’ Rolling Stones, which is a wonderful comparison. There were two versions of this album: an original 1972 issue which was released in Jamaica and the UK, and then a 1975 U.S. version which contained only three tracks from the original. It’s the latter which we’re playing here and it’s the one considered a classic of the genre. Tracks include Pressure Drop, Funky Kingston and a cover of Louie, Louise.

 

Walter Wanderley – From Rio With Love

The authentic Brazilian bossa nova sound is brought to life in this lovely collection of songs recorded by Walter Wanderley’s band. He was a 1960s Brazilian organist and music arranger, touring and performing all over the Americas with his band. You can’t listen to this album without wearing sunglasses, just FYI.

 

Trojan Ska Classics

This beauty has a stonking collection of stomping ska greats. The Skatalites, Desmond Dekker and Lord Tanamo are all included. Get your Fred Perry polo shirt on for this one.

 

Billy Vaughn – Blue Hawaii

It’s 1958 and you’re poolside in a hotel, sipping a chilled glass of Froots & the Maytals. That’s where this album will bring you – and it’s a nice place to go! Billy Vaughn was a hugely successful American orchestra leader and pop music arranger in the 50s and 60s.

 

Leon Bridges – Good Thing

This guy is ridiculously talented and the comparisons with the likes of Otis Redding are justified. His 2018 album Good Thing is blissful.
