The Story of The Stout

Our new oatmeal and coffee stout, The Breakfast of Champions, is available to buy now. You can buy it online here, and for every webshop order during the month of January we’re donating €1 to The Irish Blue Cross. We began working on this brew several months ago, when it was first tested out on our 250L pilot kit here at Rascals Inchicore. Here’s head brewer Cathal talking about ‘recirculating the wort’, with a little clip at the end of the very first glass of what would be named The Breakfast of Champions being pulled straight from the tank.

Once we were happy with the beer we decided to release a limited number of mini kegs, just to see what customers would make of it. Here’s Cathal discussing the malt profile:

The stout went down a treat with customers, especially the incredibly fine coffee notes. Let’s take a quick detour to Imbibe Coffee, our D8 neighbours in Rialto. They’re quite possibly the best coffee roasters in the country. Here’s a mesemerising and quite soothing video of their coffee-roasting process. You can just about hear Gary, Imbibe founder, in the background chatting about how it’s done but the video speaks for itself.

The coffee beans are a pale green prior to roasting; have a look in the video at the beans just before they’re put through the process.

The blend we’ve used is called Kaleidoscope and it’s really quite something. Gary and all the gang at Imbibe have been an absolute pleasure to work with and we’ve no doubt we’ll be working with them again in the future.

So all that was needed to be done was get a nice can design and get the beer out to you! Tríona, our designer, once again came up with the goods and created something really unique and befitting the beer style.

And on to the canning process! Check out this video with some tasty canning action, followed by Cathal tasting one of the first beers off the assembly line. As he says so himself: it’s a big beer so sit back, relax and enjoy it!
